There are two types of 316 stainless steel, one is 1.4401 and the other is 1.4436. The difference between these two steel numbers is the standard of thickness tolerance.

316 austenitic stainless steel should be used before the solid solution treatment, in order to maximize the carbide in the steel precipitated solid solution to the austenitic matrix, but also to homogenize the structure and eliminate stress, so as to ensure excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The correct solution treatment system is water cooling after heating at 1050 ~ 1150℃ (thin parts can also be air-cooled). Solution treatment temperature depends on the alloying degree of steel: non-molybdenum or low-molybdenum steel should be low (≤1100℃), and higher grade of alloying should be high (1080 ~ 1150℃).
316 austenitic stainless steel can also produce castings. In order to improve the fluidity of molten steel and the casting performance, the composition of cast steel alloy should be adjusted to increase the silicon content, widen the range of chromium and nickel content, and increase the upper limit of sulfur content of impurity element.
