ASTM A36 Carbon Steel Plate is a structural quality mild carbon steel. It’s strength, formability, and excellent welding properties make it suitable for a large variety of applications, including welding, fabricating, and bending. It should also be noted that A36 has a lower yield strength than C1018 which results in increased bending capabilities over C1018 steel.
The properties of A36 also make it a common choice for many construction applications. In fact, A36 is the most utilized steel for structural steel fabrication applications and it has been in use in these applications since it was first issued in 1960.

Qualified A36 steel product shall have ultimate tensile strengths ranges from 58,000 to 79,800 psi. It is not a exact number for it is affected by its chemical composition and production method. In tensile testing, ASTM A36 steel bar can elongate to around 20% of its original length. It also shows excellent impact strength at room temperature.

ASTM A36 belongs to general low carbon steel, steel product with low carbon content less than 0.3%，it is considerably soft for easy forming, machining, welding. Heat treatment has less effect on ASTM A36 steel material. It contains some other elements including alloy element: manganese, sulfur, phosphorus and silicon. Iron and these elements together forms unique mechanical property of ASTM A36, unlike stainless steel with nickel and chromium element, it doesn’t show good corrosion resistance. If you need corrosion resistant property, having it painted with a layer of plating is a good choice.
